We have a host base of about 450 host families and are working with about 95 schools throughout Europe. We have a full-time staff of 9 people. Included in that we have native French, Italian and Spanish speakers. Students can stay for a minimum of three weeks up to a maximum of one year. Not only will the students improve their professional skills, they will get to see another country from the inside but perhaps most importantly, their language skills will improve dramatically.
These placements include accommodation with the placement.
Agricultural placements: We have a huge dairy industry in Ireland with most farms having dairy cows. As a result of our wet and relatively warm weather, our grass grows very quickly and so Ireland is ideal for dairy farming. Students live as part of an Irish farming family and receive accommodation and meals in return for their help. This is practical work experience and so the student will live on the farm and help in all aspects of the day to day running of the farm, that might include milking, power hosing, tractor driving, feeding calves, helping the vet and all duties connected with the running of a farm. Students do not need to pay anything extra for food and accommodation.
Landscaping placements: Students in landscaping placements in general help a family with their garden . They look after routine garden chores such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, weeding etc but also complete a project while they are there. That project might be to create a rose garden, or a herb garden and they complete that project from start to finish. We also have a placement working in the gardens of a large castle hotel under the supervision of the head gardener (over 18s only) and we have a placement working in a company that specialises in growing plants which do well in sea air.
Horse placements: We like to have as much information as possible about horse students because there is such a wide variety of knowledge and ability within equine students and whilst we want students to be in a placement where they can learn a lot we also need to make sure they are safe. So we need extra information about a horse student’s knowledge and ability which is why we also need photos. But we have placements ranging from riding centre placements for the less experienced right through to Olympic level three-day event yards. Like the agricultural and landscaping placements students help in the yard in return for their accommodation and meals.
These others placements do not have accommodation provided by the host placement but we will organise nearby accommodation with a host family at an extra charge of €200 per week:
Animal Care : We work in partnership with a chain of pet stores and they also have a number of dog grooming parlours located in their stores. These stores normally sell pet food, equipment for animals, dog beds etc as well as small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, fish, reptiles etc. The students will be helping to look after the animals, advise customers on their care, keeping shelves stocked, keeping the store room tidy etc. Animal care students may be asked to help in the grooming parlour if it is particularly busy. Applicants must have good experience with looking after small animals and be able to advise customers about their care. Like all other applicants they need to be able to relate the placement to their education. These placements are in retail parks on the edge of larger towns. Accommodation maybe with a staff member or with a nearby family.
Dog grooming: If they choose the dog grooming option then they will be placed in one of the stores with a busy grooming parlour, helping the groomers, looking after the dogs in to be groomed, sweeping floors and will have an opportunity to learn about washing dogs and different grooming cuts. Dog grooming students may be asked to help in the pet care store if it is particularly busy.
Garden Centres: Applicants choosing the garden centre option, will be placed with a large chain of DIY shops that have garden centres attached to them. They will be helping to look after plants, helping customers, advising on the care of plants etc.
Animal care, dog grooming and garden centre placements are in retail parks on the edge of larger towns. Accommodation maybe with a staff member or with a nearby family. For this there is an extra charge of €200 per week and that must be paid before the applicant arrives. If the applicant does not stay for the full duration, then some of that money may be returned depending on circumstances.
Placements are available throughout the year and can be tailored to an individual’s requirements. These young adults come to Ireland to learn and improve their practical skills while immersing themselves in Irish culture. The student chooses what type of placement he or she would like. He or she will help in the placement for 40 – 45 hours per week and have two days off each week. Hosts very often include their students in their family’s activities and outings as we encourage host families to treat the student as they would like their son or daughter to be treated if they were living with a family in another country. As we have visited all families in advance and would be happy leaving our son or daughter with that family, you are also secure in the knowledge that the hosts have been checked out and in the event of a problem, Equipeople will step in and help sort out the issue.
These placements are legally an internship and so students must be able to relate this placement to their area of study. They will need a letter from their school to verify this.
All hosts have completed a training agreement which details what they will teach the student and the practical skills that the student will learn on the farm. The hosts have also been police checked and all hosts are visited before a student comes to that placement.
